This song was the
Pick of the Week on 2018.03.11.
Here's the story:
I wrote this song in July of 1989 but it wasn't until October that EBA worked it out as a band. I don't remember much about writing the lyrics. But I do remember working through the riffs with Tim on bass, and working to find the right hint of reggae over the blues riffing while working out the drum beats with Jon. We were really into that sort of genre blending. This was written after the Full Moon Studios recording session from that spring that ended up on the Brown Carpet & Full Moon album, so the only recordings from that year are the videos from Oliver's in October and from our appearance on TV in November.
This recording is on EBA's 1994 album spreading more jam, which has the first two of several jam sessions we recorded as EBA before expanding the band into Killer Whirlpool in 1996. This is from my housewarming party on October 5, 1991, recorded with two mics into a cassette deck in my new family room. We hadn't played together in almost two years, and we had to use lyric sheets for some of these newer songs that hadn't gotten drilled into our head from repetition. But for what we lacked in tightness we made up for in enthusiasm for playing a bunch of our favorite EBA songs together again. It was a really fun session!
Thanks for listening!

spin & shatter
and if in every mountain lies a seashell
every river rolls a rock
and if in every flower lies sweet nectar
every insect feels a lonely thought
how can I make a difference
when I am so small?
the world is spinning spinning
I lose my way sometimes
and fall into the water
illusions spun, illusions shattered
spin and shatter
and if in every cascade sings a muse
in every forest spins a spell
and if in every mind's a different view
no ultimate reality
then we can make a difference
though we are so small
the world is spinning spinning
we lose our way sometimes
and fall into the water
illusions spun, illusions shattered
spin and shatter
and if in every wind is seeds of change
we will be free someday
and if in every eye a star of life
in every voice a soul of song
we will be free from knowing
when we see it all
the world is spinning spinning
we lose our way sometimes
and fall into the water
illusions spun, illusions shattered
spin and shatter

This CD was made from two cassette recordings: a 1991 reunion jam, and a 1994 improv jam.
The October 5, 1991 jam was the first time EBA had played together since calling it quits in 1989. It was recorded with two mics to a cassette deck in Andy's den, a.k.a. mangobananas recording studio.
The 1994 jam (starts with "my ears") was recorded with two mics to cassette in Jon's living room.
Everything But Anchovies
Members:
Jon Morse - drums
Tim Odell - bass, vocals
Andy Wyatt - vocals, guitars
Years of Activity:
1978-1995
Overview:
Started as Voyager in 1979. Briefly included Pete Downes as rhythm guitarist. Changed name to The Raid in 1981, and to Everything But Anchovies in 1986. Played about 85 gigs around Ithaca, NY and a few nearby towns between 1980-1989. Most were at The Nines (16), second-most at Oliver's (11), third-most at the Hidden Valley 4H camp (11), and fourth-most at T.J. Tuesday's (8). After the last gig, a live TV broadcast in November 1989, we didn't play again until 1991, when we got together for a reunion jam at Andy's new house (see Spreading More Jam). We did likewise at Jon's new house in 1993 for the first Voyager reunion, then in 1995 we started getting together for EBA improv sessions. This evolved into Killer Whirlpool by 1996.
