31into the station2007.11.20Tim - drum programming, bass Andy - drum programming, guitars Tim visiting from the UK, an afternoon of fun in the studio....Nov 20, 2007. The awesome rhythm comes from the trains in England via Tim, the great syncopation and melding of the two parts was awesome. I played my Strat, Tim played Eric's bass. We both went DI thru the Firepod, jamming together to find the riffs while monitoring thru the studio monitors. We recorded bits for different loops separately. The guitar doing the rhythm crunch is tuned CADGBE (E dropped down to a C). Logic's bass amp and guitar amp plugins were used on all gits. 701lefty looseyThe Tim & Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/sixfootmoles.jpg

33cuban sandwich2007.07.12Tim: bass (2 tracks) Andy: guitar (Strat) (3 tracks), drum programming, acoustic guitar Jon: drum kit Recording started 8 Feb 2006 in mangobananas studio, Ithaca, NY, with Tim and Andy recording loops. Another quick jam with Tim (Feb 8, 2006) over a drum beat I programmed with the mouse using Ultrabeat synth. This has some cool effects and potential for layering -- I can hear a gravelly rap over this, some urban devolution and psychedelic descent. On July 2 (Jon jam 4) Jon overdubbed drums while I played strat doing some soloing. When mixing and arranging that I found an acoustic guitar part that I layed in for 8 or 10 measures as an alternate part. Recorded that on the Taylor with the usual 2 mic setup on July 5, 2007. Also, while I was walking though the song 2 bars at a time doing the drum comps, I heard goovy parts and I played around and recorded with clavinet (EVD6) and piano (EXS24). The piano part is becoming the vocal melody (or counter-melody) in my head. That got me to this final mix on July 12, 2007.701lefty looseyThe Tim & Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/sixfootmoles.jpg

40bullfrogs and fireworks2006.06.30Jon - drums Andy - acoustic guitar, programmed percussion and drums, programmed piano, real bass, acoustic lead guitar At Jon's house June 30, 2006. Liz and twins at Bonaparte, Jon and I jammin'. The night after the jam, late night Sat. July 1, 2006: wow, discovered Logic does "beat mapping". This lets me set the metronome to us playing by constantly making small adjustments to the tempo by drawing a line between the metronome ruler marks and marks made for transients in the kick, snare, agit tracks (whatever I tell it to analyze). Wow that made things go from good to awesome. I added an Apple Loop, "Conga Groove 10", and then dropped in a MIDiI loop "World Bongo 03" that was bongos in the loop browser but I used it on an UltraBeat track with the 2-step drum kit and a Sculpture track with the "Tribal Drums" patch. I even copied it to an EXS24 "Grand Piano" track and added some chords. That's mix 1. Another night, I added chords to take the progression from 2 chords to a longer 8-bar pattern, for some parts. Some night I wrote that beautiful piano part for the 2 crescendos, just clicking in the Matrix Editor. Late July 5 (Wed) I recorded real bass, the Ibanez Roadstar II direct through the Firepod. That made mix 2. in the afternoon of July 13 (Thu), I recorded an acoustic guitar overdub (the Earthworks SR77 up close through the Symetrix preamp and S/PDIF, the Rode NT1-A a bit more than 2 feet away through the Firepod). That makes mix 3, what ended up the final mix. 704bullfrog paradise (feat. Jon)The Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/jonjam5.jpg
41zone of tone2006.05.20Andy - electric guitar (strat) Tim - bass Drum loops from GarageBand, arranged by Tim and Andy Tim came over May 20, 2006 for an afternoon. I'd just gotten my new Taylor 310 (acoustic guitar), but after we checked it out on the deck and talked a while I didn't record with it. This is partly because I'd previously busted the G string and replaced it with a non-Elixer Daddario string that sounded different to me. And this was a rockin' loop we got going on, with Tim riffin out and me jammin over it --and check the little grunty yeah yeah noises in the drum loop! We recorded a splurge of jammin' over the loops with me on electric guitar (Strat) and Tim on bass (Eric's Ibanez Roadstar). It was a fun jam, and the first 5 minutes or more weren't even recorded. I wanted to let Tim just rock with what he wanted to do as far as arrangement, wanted to give him a taste of producing what's in your head with a multi-track program like this. Those Apple Loops are pretty awesome. We jammed out, then played around with some cutting and pasting and tried to build an arrangement. It took longer and than TIm probably expected, but we got something pretty cool done in about 3 hours. Mix 1 is pretty much as we left the mix when Tim had to go that afternoon. I may or may not do anything else with this. Cool jam! Small World! 701lefty looseyThe Tim & Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/sixfootmoles.jpg
42island 292005.05.21+27Jon - drums Andy - 3 guitars and bass (strat (w/drums, chorused 9C?), bass [DADG], strat solo (9D, with mda circle panner), les paul clickity bits (1D)) Awesome reggae groove jammed out Sat night 5/21/2005. Overdubs started Monday night (5/23) with bass [DADG] doing a killer low riff. Then a loopy little solo track circling around the head and echoing. This is going somewhere cool. Friday morning 5/27/05, B&I taking a vacation day, I got up at 6:30 or so and re-did the bass part. The last note of the riff was kicked, but the kick drum wasn't, so I held back and got on it and it sounds great. I did a bit more experimentation with little riffs, too, and I like it. Then I also decided the mda Stereo things created digital clipping that was harsh, so I took that off the guitar and bass. I instead did my usual manual double-track by copying and shifting. Then I did a new guitar track with my Les Paul through patch 1D of the POD, playing mostly little clicky bits that sound great. 704bullfrog paradise (feat. Jon)The Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/jonjam5.jpg
43paradise2005.05.21Jon - drums Andy - 5 guitar tracks: strat (w/ drums, chorused clean), bass, L&R acoustics, strat (heavy) This is the first track Jon and I jammed out together 5/21/2005, a great night of jamming just drums and guitar in my den (B visiting E in CT). Drums recorded with 6 mics - kick (NAD KBM412), snare (Earthworks SR77), L overhead (Rode NT1-A), R overhead (AT2020), rack toms (SM57), and floor tom (SM57). My old AudioSpectrum SM58 knockoff was used for the vocals, and it was pointed too much towards the drums and got a lot of harsh drum noise. But the vocal track is pretty precious in a way, so I've mixed it best I can. Guitar was the Strat through the POD (9D? not sure of the patch) into the Firepod direct. Overdubs done in the wee hours, first bass (direct into Firepod), then two acoustic guitars (Earthworks SR77), then heavy electric (POD 1A patch into Firepod). Rough mix Saturday night, refined Monday 5/23 at work. 704bullfrog paradise (feat. Jon)The Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/jonjam5.jpg

73new office1996Jon Morse - drums sampled from "Live It Up" on the cassette Voyager, March 1980. Andy - sample of singing to my voice mail from my cell phone, sampled three times and layered and panned; two acoustic guitars [DADGBE] (all recorded with PlainTalk mic); acoustic guitar strumming [DADGBE], bass [DADG], piano [stereo], electric guitar through Twin Reverb amp [stereo], and vocals [with doubled delay track]. Pretty far out. Could stay as is, could get more stuff, or be an intro to a bigger better song. (1/11/96). Became a better song by making the cell phone & acoustic guitar part an intro to the rockin drum, piano, guitar thing that developed with a similar melody in my head. Yes! Fabulous mix! Piano is powerful! (1/22/96). The ending is particularly beautiful, with the electric guitar and piano. I remember that I couldn't hear the piano when I was playing the guitar at the end, beacuse I hadn't decided it was part of the song yet, it was "outside the loop". But I played that bit of guitar sort of remembering what I'd done on the piano, and it melded beautifully for the first part of the piano but wasn't long enough. So in a haphazard fashion, I selected a swatch of guitar audio at the end, option-cmd-dragged it so it jumped onto the end, did the same again, and then chose the reverse command for the middle section. The way that stuff ended up lining up with the piano, the awesome coincidence of timing there, still amazes me. 6leave a traceThe Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/leaveatrace.jpg
